Portrayed by Christian Johnson
We Pennsylvanians, indeed all Americans, owe a great deal to William Penn and Penn’s “Noble Experiment.” The Absolute Proprietor of the Province of Pennsylvania, Penn exemplified the gold standard for leadership. Here was a man of integrity who turned from family and fortune to hear his inner voice, to find his inner light, to found Pennsylvania. Not only did this charismatic leader champion democracy and religious freedom for himself and for other Quakers, he was one of the few ardent advocates for political and religious opportunity for non-Quakers, even for non-Christians. And he treated Native Americans with respect, honoring treaties he made and often paying several times to various individuals and tribes laying claim to ownership of land Penn bought. When warned by the King to take 2 regiments with him when visiting the “savages” in the forests, Penn replied, “Let us see now what Love can do.”
A man of vision, Penn planned and developed Philadelphia, calling it his “Greene Country Towne.” His Pennsylvania Frame of Government and Charter of Liberties were precursors for our Constitution. And his goal for a cooperative world found fruition in the United Nations, which celebrates their founding on his birthday, October 14th. The Old City wall dedicated to William Penn was “opened” by Chris Johnson, chosen as Philadelphia’s William Penn to commemorate the 350th anniversary of William Penn’s birth in 1994.
