Portrayed by Christian Johnson
William Livingston is much-beloved for his service and devotion to the Revolution and to young America. Born in New York to an aristocratic family, Livingston graduated from Yale and pursued law. With his brilliant mind, he quickly rose in his chosen profession. And with his commitment to the cause of civil and religious liberty, he wrote keenly observant pieces that encouraged and excited American Patriots to embrace Revolutionary ideals. Moving to New Jersey, Livingston was elected the first governor of the state in 1776 and he was re-elected to this post every year until he died. As governor, Livingston was called the “Governor on Horseback,” never able to return home during the war, too busy inspiring Patriots to join the militia and join him in the fight. Appointed to the grand convention which formed the Constitution, Livingston predicted the future war between the states if slavery were not made extinct.
Christian Johnson evokes William Livingston’s fiery mind, his contagious passion, his dedication to the Patriot Cause and his faithfulness to the principals for which he had fought. An impressive figure in his own right, Mr. Johnson has devoted his considerable artistic talents to embodying historical characters such as William Livingston, keeping their light alive.
