Portrayed by Ian Rose
A Scottish soldier, member of the British army’s 42nd Highlanders unit, Robert McGillvraie tells a tale from our enemy’s point of view. It’s 1778, and only 30-some years back, Scotland and Great Britain fought each other. But Robert McGillvraie enlisted in 1755 during the French and Indian War. He’s a Redcoat, fighting as a Scotsman for the Brits because in the Scottish clan system, a fellow of humble means could advance through merit. In the Scotland of 1755, you could borrow money, purchase a commission and if you were both brave and lucky, you could earn a promotion. In fact, the Scottish economy was so miserable that 50% of British units were Scotsmen hoping to improve their status and helping fellow Scotsmen trying to do the same. Now it’s 1778 and the British occupy Philadelphia and are winning the Revolutionary War.
Ian Rose’s Lieutenant Robert McGillvraie served in the French and Indian War, between the wars and now serves as General Howe’s aide-de-camp in the Battle of Germantown. Rose details his dangerous missions, riding between British headquarters and outlying units. In authentic Scottish kilt and equipped with a British dragoon (pistol) and basket-hilted claidhmoire, Ian Rose demonstrates how to load and fire his weapons, while providing the drama, danger and intrigue from our enemy’s point of view.
