Adult Programs Winter 2012

Audubon Lecture:  Owls of New Jersey

Thursday,  February 9                              7-9 PM

Owls  are among our most fascinating wildlife.  There are eight species of these mostly nocturnal raptors, living in New Jersey, four of which commonly nest here.  Dorothy Smullen, teacher/naturalist with the NJ Audubon Society presents an illustrated program which explains the adaptations that make these birds successful hunters.   You will have an opportunity to view a few mounted specimens, listen to owl calls and learn to identify their pellets.

Fee: $8 IC/ $10 OC

Dramatization/Lecture:  The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln

Friday February 17                                     7-8 PM

Christian Johnson, dramatist with the American Historical Theatre portrays Lincoln with impressive resonance, giving insight into his strength of character. This revered leader was  a team-builder, who created a cabinet of rivals and tested them.  Join us for a memorable evening celebrating President’s week.  This program is made possible in part by a grant from The New Jersey Council for the Humanities.  Fee: donations welcomed.

Lecture/Walk :Identifying  Five Tracks and  Five Trees:

Saturday March 10                      1-2:30 PM

Enhance your appreciation of a seasonal walk in the woods, when you learn how to identify animal tracks and trees in winter.   A trailside naturalist will lead you on a walk and awaken your awareness to the clues you need. .  At the end of the program you should be able to identify five  tracks and trees! Dress appropriately for an outdoor walk.

Fee:  $8 IC/$10 OC

Teacher Training Workshop:  Environmental Education for Early Learners with PLT/Project WILD

Wednesday March 14, 2012                                               9-3 PM

Environmental Education for Early Learners with PLT and Project WILD has new programs to reach early learners with hands-on nature investigations. Through sensory activities, music, song and dance, as well as snacks and crafts, students gain an awareness of the natural world.   Each workshop participant will receive the award-winning PLT guide and music CD as well as the Project WILD guide, supplemental materials that support the lessons in NJ as well as craft and snack ideas for the  classroom. In addition, participants will earn  6 NJDOE credits.  Morning refreshments are provided. Bring lunch. There will be some time outdoors. Dress appropriately for the weather.    Fee:   $25 IC/OC

Lecture:  The Raptor Trust Story:

Thursday March 22                     7:15-8:15 PM

Thousands of injured and orphaned wild birds are nursed back to health at the Raptor Trust.  This program offers a behind-the-scenes look at what the Trust does to care for them.  The presentation focuses on raptors, for which the center is named.  Lauren Butcher, the Trust’s Education Director, will  discuss  common injuries, medical procedures, the seasonal care of baby bird and how various  species are cared for.  Ms. Butcher will  share some of their fascinating stories.  One the Trust’s ‘avian ambassadors,’  a live educational hawk or owl, will be part of the program as well.
