Larry Clowers was initially cast as Ulysses S. Grant by a director at Appomatox because of Clowers’ strong resemblance to the sturdy, 5’8” tall, full-bearded Grant. But the two men have more in common than their similar physical appearance. Larry has served 26 years as a high-ranked enlisted man in the Air Force and was trained by the Army’s Signal Corps to write and direct historical scripts. An experienced horseman, Mr. Clowers appeared as a cavalryman in several Hollywood westerns. And he shares the Quiet Man’s earnestness and commitment to fundamental values such as loyalty to friends and family and a generosity of spirit.
Portraying General and President Ulysses S. Grant since the late 1990’s, Mr. Clowers draws from his complete 33-volume collection of Grant’s writings. Bill Sommerfield, AHT’s premiere George Washington, invited Larry to join AHT in 2006 after the two met while performing in Charlestown, West Virginia. Mr. Clowers has interpreted Mr. Grant at the Pentagon, Department of Agriculture, conventions, reunions, school groups, tour groups, theaters, and in a commercial for the Civil War Preservation Trust. Grant has been called a “butcher” for events at Cold Harbor, but when Larry appears with his wife, Connie Clowers as his historical wife, Julia Dent Grant, “the brightest star in [Grant’s] universe,” the couple offers their audience a much softer side to this military and political man.
